I found it very difficult to manage with the small bag, so I used the big bag at all times. I put it in a shopping bag and carried it around where ever I went. While I hated living with a catheter, had I known what life would be like once the catheter was pulled, I would have spent less time counting the days until it was removed.
I found sleeping with a catheter difficult, so I did two things: 1. I slept in a reclining chair 2. I asked for sleeping medication for those 10 days.
I slept through the night every night. It would be many months after the catheter was removed before that would happen again.
There is very little pain with the removal of the catheter. I suggest bringing a diaper to the appointment, because it's highly likely you'll leak urine during the drive home.

I am surprised there are not more recommendations. First thing I asked for was ointment. The nurse looked puzzled and the best she could do was Vaseline. I went right to work lubing the tube. Hind sight is 20/20, should have asked for help. ;-) Once you start walking it is much more comfortable. It also gave me an excuse to see if there were any feelings down there. Second thing I learned the hard way was to leave air in my bag. When I drained the bag from the bottom valve it vacuum sealed the bag. Now if peeing the bed even with a catheter in place is what you want, don't leave an air pocket in the bag. Funny, staff never new there was a solution or reason for the leaky catheter. I wrote and called TENA and Depends representatives. TENA sent a sample package. Unfortunately I was almost dry by the time it arrived so I gave it too my urologist office. They started to buy Guards for patients after I was a patient. They also gave ointment and explained about air in the bag to new patients. Positive results from a negative experience. Make the trail better for those that come after.
Oh and don't try using a Kotex. A mans Guard is designed for male parts. Depends have a pocket for our junk. And the TENA Guard is shaped like a bicycle seat. Unless you want to duck tape your penis to your belly Kotex won't work. As I started to leak less I wanted something less bulky. No choice but Kotex. Depends only market maximum guards, TENA only market moderate guards. I tried Kotex and my penis feel to one side or the other thus wet pants.

Not one post for an erection with the catheter? 48 hours post surgery I woke up in extreme pain from my penis. I screamed for my wife who was sleeping in the bedroom. I slept commando on the couch where the bag could lie on the floor. Needless to say I had my first nocturnal erection and the catheter was not long enough! Thankfully I knew how to activate the quick release button. Don't know what the nurses or robot did while I was out but someone like it. When the nurse took out my catheter she asked if I had any questions. I had one question. She followed with an inquiry. What is your question? When can I use it? Why she asked? I said it is working and I want to try it out! She said no one has ever asked that question when she took the catheter out. She went for the doctor. He told me that he never touched it and as long as I did not bend, twist, or lift anything over 5 lbs I was golden.

Woke up this morning and had this horrible thought!!!! What would have happened if the robot went nuts while working on me? ?? Then I thought about some of the surgeons and figured it could have happened with humans too! Anyway, how many men get their catheter caught on a chair while walking? I did!!!!! Ouch!

I don't understand about air in the bag. Do you want air? If so, how do you achieve it?
