Rick, What are you doing now? Have you gone for the implant? I can achieve a hardness level of 7 of 10 most of the time using 2.5mg Cialis every day. Next month I'm doing 2 other things since I still don't have night-time erections. The dose of my daily Cialis will go up to 5mg daily. The other thing I'm doing is going for a consult at UCSF in Jan. I'll see what the Urologist there has to offer. I wouldn't consider a transplant as long as I can achieve a usable erection.

Hi I'm Richard prostate left in Chatham Kent England 55 married 2 children 8 and 18 company director previously fit and healthy take regular exercise includes;spinning, cycling, swimming, walking, jogging..... an active dad! PSA tested Jan 12 was 8.4 re-tested Feb at 9.2 midly enlarged prostate noted TRUS biopsy March 12 benign PSA re-tested Sept 12 13.5 a rise, tested 2 more times 12.8 and then 13 and had an MRI Nov 12 2 suspicious areas showing bilateral but organ confined carcinoma MRI pre-biopsy T2c NO MX followed by template biopsies April 13 Gleason 3+4 with 8mm tumor in 7/29 cores both sides of the gland. After considering in some detail all the options offered to me and some that were not I elected to have LRP. An unexpected benefit of my diagnosis was a critical illness pay out to my company who had insured many years before! Had procedure 18/9/2013 after a lovely active family holiday. So Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy on 18th Sept 2013 under Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS but procedure carried out at Medway Maritime. They found a reasonable volume of prostate cancer, but as the MRI scan showed there was no evidence of extra-prostatic spread. I was very pleased that my surgeon was very happy with how the procedure went and he was able to carry out a bilateral nerve sparing procedure as the scans and biopsies suggested the tumour was not in the vicinity of the Neuro-vascular bundles.
I was discharged the following day and can only compliment the excellent care and treatment provided during my short stay at Medway. My wife and children visited me on the day after my op which was very uplifting for me.
I was given medication for pain relief, constipation and ED to take away. I was started immediately on Cialis 5mg daily. My catheter was removed 1 week post-surgery at Maidstone Hospital this was a fantastic relief as although I was getting accustomed to it I really want rid ASAP and was ready for the next stage.
Post op Histology – pT2c NX Mx Gleason 7 Surgical margin positive (circumferential only) this occurred where the surgeon nicked the capsule wall as part of nerve sparing procedure. I have been given stats of 95% of PC not returning for 10 years, I will take those odds.
Been dry since Christmas Eve 13 no more pads!!! ED is an issue but being patient!!

I posted most of this on another thread but this maybe a better place to have written. I am from New Hampshire and I left my prostate in the hospital in Derry NH. Hopefully it went to a good family of worms. No need to waste something that was so good to me for almost 60 years. Here is my story: I had surgery at 9am back from recovery at 1pm. By 6pm I was walking 10 minutes every hour. By 3am the next day I started getting feeling back in my penis. At 10am that morning my wife was getting me dressed and I was getting hard. She asked the nurse if it was possible? The nurse said no. My wife laughed and said she knew what they looked like and was getting an erection. Went home and that night I had my first nocturnal erection. Hurt like hell until I released the catheter from the leg clamp. Took 50mg of Viagra for a couple of months then reduced it too 25mg. By 8 months I was biting the pills in half and at 12 months no pills needed. I do still take half a 25mg for guaranteed results. It also allows me to stay erect longer. My face turns flush so I don't like to take the pill but that means longer fore play. Now last month I was busy and sex was put on the back burner. Nocturnal erection where ignored and I did not even masturbate. When the big night came I tried no pill and very little fore play. The first attempt at penetration failed. More fore play and second attempt worked but with a 75% erection not as enjoyable. Needless to say I am back to working on blood flow. With or without my wife I work on getting and erection and keeping it hard. Am I proud to have to do this at 60? No! But after talking with my wife we agree that we are to young to give up this part of our relationship. So she is more understanding when she sees me rubbing the little one. I don't know how any man can pull up his pants and ignore this part and expect it to stay strong. I sit on the toilet and try and lift my penis. When I started I could not get it to move, now I can lift it an inch or more. I also found when I stopped my Kegel exercises I started to leak more. Back to Kegel and exercise has and I am dry again. Don't know if this is going to be a life time thing or not. But at 16 months out I need to keep working at recovery. My PSA went from 1.9 to 7 in a year. First biopsy 8 of 12 where negative 4 undetermined. Second biopsy 1 needle 20% positive. F.I.S.H. test revealed moderately aggressive cancer. 3-3 cancer was confined to the prostate. Hospital was spotless, staff very attentive, and I have never regretted my choice. I know 6 men at my gym everyone has a different result. Seeds, radiation, open pubic, and robotic. 35 years ago there was NO hope for dryness or erections. I have one friend that waited to long and even after surgery 3 year ago he is getting things in order. He has 2-3 months to live. This surgery started in 1905. Imagine what your life would have been like in that time period. One gentleman is 85, had surgery when he was 54. Never had another erection and has worn diapers ever since. He spent 3 days in ICU and 10 more days in the hospital before he was released. When I stopped exercising I started to leak again, I was pretty upset. What did he do? Gave me a hug, told me to suck it up and smile. I am 6'2", 60 years old. He is 5'7" 85 years old. Strength is not measured by the length of your penis, it is by the size of your heart. God Bless

RichardPaul, Thanks for sharing your experiences with surgery. Becoming pad free is one of those post-surgery milestones worth celebrating! I'm curious, were you told it could take 18-24 months before you'd experience a spontaneous erection? What, if any form of penile rehab are you participating in other than the 5mg of Cialis daily.

Jehjr, Thanks for sharing your experiences with surgery and life post surgery. To anyone coping with ED following surgery these words you shared are priceless: "Strength is not measured by the length of your penis, it is by the size of your heart. God Bless" I've heard from very few men who said they erectile abilities came back to pre-surgery levels 7 out of 10 ain't bad and might be as good as it gets. If it is, I suspect you'll live with that and make the best of it. Thanks for sharing! Rick

The one thing no one does and maybe it is because you can't, evaluate what you have pre surgery. If I take half a 25mg pill of Viagra I think I am at 100%. You maybe right about never reaching 100% if you take the length of time for keeping an erection, the firmness, or the ability to create one with little to no stimulation. At 18 it only took a Sears catalog. Now it takes much more, but that is because of age.
Remember that when you are young you can run til you drop. Now I have a car.

Rick Thanks for your response I have got a pump but have only used it a few times I really don't get on with it so I may try the injections? Only other re-hab is daily masturbation to climax some times twice a day that part still works and is ok different to before but ok!

RichardPaul, I hated the pump. A total waste of money. I went the injection route. It isn't as bad as it sounds. I preferred to use an auto-injector. The best to you. Rick

Kent, Welcome to our post-surgery forum! You were relatively young to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. I wasn't too much older. I was dx at 58. I've read that the younger you are the better you do post-surgery with both urinary control and erectile functioning. Did you find that to be true or are you still dealing with post-surgery issues? Rick

Mine is in Rochester,ny on 3/24/14 Welcome to our post-surgery forum. Given how recently your prostate was removed, it's highly likely you are still dealing with the loss of urinary control and/or ED. You should be receiving your post surgical pathology report any day. If you have any questions or want to share your experienced, please feel free to do that. I think the first year post surgery was one of the worst and most difficult years of my life. Glad you found us and I hope we can provide you with information and support.

Hi Rick, I left mine in Kansas City on November 18th, 2013. I had just turned 54 and what a surprise! My gleason was a 3/3, 1 of 12 cores, 12 psa and problems with weak stream. No family history of it. I was given the 3 options and my wife and I elected to have surgery. My first post surgery psa test was negative. My next test comes in early June.
I have the option of monthly meetings (attended one), but those round table discussions about this topic aren't my kind of thing. God blessed me with only about 2 1/2 months of incontinence, then it gradually stopped. I learned after surgery that I absolutely hate catheter tubes, I was miserable with it. E.D. is going to be a problem (I think). My wife rates me at 75% on that. I think time and healing might help, but I don't know. I take a 5mg pill of cialis every-other day per the doctor.
My brother and I were talking about the surgery. He asked about E.D. I told him that I think my penis had a stroke! My wife and I keep what we think are the right frame of minds about this. I can see how one can get depressed about it. I have to remind myself to keep upbeat thoughts.
I'll be checking back in and reading posts here. Thanks for starting the forum.
May God bless you all.
