I did receive both urinary control and penile prosthesis around 1 year after my radical prostatectomy. My doctor did explain these options pre-prostatectomy surgery, so I knew that it would be possible for me to take advantage of that option. I was only 47 when I was diagnosed, so this was an option that I knew that I had to fall back on if necessary. I'm also pretty healthy and not overweight (high blood pressure and somewhat higher cholesterol), but other than that, not much else. (I quit smoking and haven't smoked since the day my doctor told me I had cancer). I had some complications post prostatectomy surgery, which included problems with my catheter not staying in the correct position inside the bladder. I had to have a catheter for 2 months after surgery. I'm not sure if this had anything to do with added nerve damage, but what's done is done. I decided to have both implants, because 1 year after the surgery, I had absolutely no erection, and was going through around 6 pads a day. Hearing from other people, the incontinence wasn't going to improve much, and possibly the erection problem would get a little better. For about a week after the implant surgery (had both done at same time) I cursed my doctor every name in the book. He did tell me pre-surgery that I was going to do this, because bruising and swelling were quite substantial. Now, today after about 8 months after surgery, I am SO GLAD I went through with the procedure. I do have to wear a pad most the time, but ONLY LEAKS when coughing or sneezing. The only downfall on the prosthetic, is that I personally lost about 1" in size when erect, but doctor also told me this pre-surgery also. All in all, I am 100% happy that I went throught with this. (p.s.-anybody getting advice to go on testosterone therapy, DON'T!! I was on testotersone shots for 4 years and am 100% convinced it's what caused my prostate cancer, just my opinion). Thanks for reading.

Another couple side notes to above:
1) Intercourse is about 95% satisfaction of what it used to be, I'd say 2) Amount of leakage when coughing or sneezing will depend on factors such as how hard you're coughing and how full your bladder is. You can also tighten your pelvic muscles during these times to control a lot of it, also.

Ken, Thanks for sharing your experiences. We've already had 36 people check out this thread in less than 24 hours, so don't be surprised if people start asking you questions soon. Rick

Pegley, Thanks for sharing a success story with a penile implant. It's very kind of you to make your e-mail address available to men who have questions about implants.

Wow! I had radical prostatectomy in July of '11; never had a problem with erections before surgery; my urologist says that they didn't damage the nerves, but things have just never returned. Tried the pills, with no results; used a pump (still do for a very temporary result), but I have used the injection of trimix with pretty good results, but a fairly small dose gives me a three hour erection! I may look into a penile implant, or at least ask some questions. My second batch/Rx of trimix didn't work, so they mixed up another batch for me (small bottle is $90.00); haven't tried it yet. Thanks, everyone, for sharing so honestly!

Arthur, A 3 hour erection with a small dose of trimix is a very good result. I was told you can cut down the dose until your erection lasts approximately 45 minutes. After a few months, injections stopped working for me. I hope you'll have good results with your second batch. When you said you tried pills, what exactly did you try. I didn't have much success taking pills once or twice a week, but once I started on 2.5 mg of Cialis daily I began to get a response. I'm 3 years post surgery, so don't give up! Rick

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in Nov 10 and had a robtic radical prostatectomy in Dec 10. I had full bladder control by May but complete ED in spite of the Dr's assurances and using the pump and pills. At 2.5 years I had enough and decided on an implant. I had a Titan 3 piece installed and it was tough for a few weeks. Even after a few months there was still discomfort. My Dr told me it would take 6 months to heal. He was spot on and from that time (Oct 13) until ow, my wife and I both agree that it was the best decision we could have made. I recommend at least getting info on an implant if you are having problems.

SJMAn I appreciate your coming on board and sharing your experience with an implant. This is relatively new thread, yet hundreds of people have visited here seeking information about this procedure. I'm grateful to all who have and who will share their experiences. Rick

Here's a quote from a man who had the implant:
I received an penis implant in 6/14 & have been celebrating life robustly ever since. Please inquire about this surgery that although somewhat painful initially has granted me most of what I lost including the ability to act like I did before cancer. It is even better because you can pump it up for hours without consequences. I recommend this to all prostate cancer patients suffering in silence with ED.

When I started this thread I was still hoping that I'd be successful with ED medication. However 3.5 years after surgery and less responsiveness than ever to medication, I surprised myself and decided to go through with penile implant surgery. I hope to have the procedure sometime in Jan of 2015. I'll be sharing my personal experiences with the implant with the goal of helping provide other men with information about the implant as an option to treat ED. Since I had double nerve sparing surgery I never thought I'd need to consider this, but I've learned through experience that double nerve sparing surgery is NOT a guarantee you'll regain your erectile functioning.

had my surgery 9 days ago and mostly pain free, my only complaint so far is the discomfort of the pump in my scrotum and my semi erect state since surgery. I go for my 2 week follow up in 6 days and am looking forward to getting deflated for a few days so healing can complete and hopefully remaining discomfort will go away. Does anyone know how long it takes for the scrotum to get used to the weight of the pump and the mild discomfort it causes? On a bright note I can say I was pleasantly surprised this surgery on pain scale was not near as bad as I thought it would be. Only took pain meds for first 3 days and kept ice packs on and at this time only mild discomfort remains
