I began to experience bladder spasms while I was in the hospital. Not only did I experience pain, I noticed that the spasms caused urine to leak around the tube of the catheter. If you notice urine leaking around the tube of your catheter, it's very likely you've just experienced either a mild or painful bladder spasm.
What you eat or drink can cause bladder spasms, so here's a list of foods and drinks that may cause bladder spasms:
Spicy, acidic, or citrusy foods and the chemicals in certain preservatives and food additives may irritate the lining of the bladder. Such products include: Alcohol Artificial sweeteners Caffeinated beverages such as soda, coffee, and tea Chocolate Citrus fruits and drinks, such as oranges and orange juice Pickled foods Tomatoes
You might avoid all of these items and still experience bladder spasms.
The good news is if this, your Urologist can prescribe medication that can that can stop these spasms. If this becomes an issue ask for medication.

I only had one bladder spasm, about 6 days after my surgery, but it was the worst pain I had ever experienced in my life. I didn't know anyone could possibly hurt that bad, and the medication the doctor prescribed was not strong enough to last over an hour or so. When I saw the doctor the next day, I asked for something stronger, which he prescribed--but I never took it because I never had another spasm.

Tom First, welcome to the forum. Though we receive hundreds of pages views a week, most men visit for information. We don't have a community of active posters at this time. I painful bladder spasms for 5 years. When I had implant surger they gave me magnesium and they stopped At home I started taking magnesium every day andi haven't had a spasm since. Glad to hear you only had one!
