When it comes to providing comfort, it is not the comforters job to take away the pain. So try not to say anything that would INCREASE someone's pain. Here's a link to a great blog of things NOT to say: What Not to say to someone with cancerve always admired Job. When he got seriously frustrated with his comforters he said: I have heard many such things; Miserable comforters are you all! Shall words of wind have an end?
(Job 16:2-3) If you don't know what to say to someone don't say anything, or a simple "I'm sorry you are going through this, is there anything I can do?" isn't a bad response. The blog gives a list of awful things to say. As more people join, I hope this thread will be place to share both good and bad comfort, so those with a sincere desire to comfort will learn much from this thread.
